Whether outside before or run or even before a lift session, warmups are necessary to loosen up your muscles, and get some blood pumping to your heart.
Okay? So what?
So...this can help prevent injuries, and can help muscle related soreness.
So...start simple!
If I am at the gym I will either be on the elliptical or the row machine for 5-10 minutes before I do any type of stretching.
If I'm outside, I start with jumping jacks, mountain climbers, pushups, arm circles and more. Anything to get the blood pumping, maybe get ya a little sweaty.
Then I always start from my ankles, and try to stretch every muscle group on my body. i.e: ankles, calves, quads, hamstrings, groin, butt, back, chest, arms, and neck.
Pretend you are in high school gym class getting ready to play something. Remember those warm-up stretches? The ones where everyone counted out loud together? Yes those! They are actually perfect. Do them!
Then if I feel stiff or tight anywhere specifically, I go back and stretch that body part more.
Make sure you're feeling loose! Then you're ready for your workout! GO! GO! GO!
